How to Make Natural Cleaning Supplies with Essential Oils

Do you think about what is in your laundry detergent, dish soaps and the cleaning solutions in your home? Many people don’t and they should. Most commercial cleaning products contain toxic chemicals. No laws have been implemented that require disclosure of cleaning products’ ingredients. So even as you try to make decisions based on transparency… there really is none. The following recipes will help you stay healthy by removing the toxins in your home and replacing them with natural alternatives.

DIY Dish Soap

Most of the dish soap bought in the store contains methylisothiazolinone, which is toxic to aquatic life and is known to cause skin irritation. Some contain formaldehyde which is a known carcinogen. There are lots of other unrecognizable ingredients that have potential health risks. Here is an easy, healthy alternative:

Ingredients:

2 cups unscented Castile soap

20 drops Lime essential oil

8 drops Lemon essential oil

6 drops Citrus Bliss® essential oil (a doTerra blend of wild orange, lemon, grapefruit, mandarin, bergamot, tangerine, clementine, peels and vanilla bean absolute)

Directions:

Fill a large, clean bottle with Castile soap; dilute according to instructions if using a concentrate.

Add essential oils. Shake bottle before each use.

Add 1-2 tablespoons to dish water for use.

DIY Laundry Detergent

1,4-Dioxane is in many laundry detergents like Tide. This chemical is suspected of causing cancer among a long list of other health risks. Other vague terms such as buffer, surfactant, and stabilizer are basically undisclosed ingredients. Stabilizer could be ethylene oxide…known to cause cancer. Clothes are touching your skin (largest organ) 24/7, so it’s best not to have hundreds of chemicals against you all day.

Ingredients:

1 bar of grated Castile bar soap

1 cup of washing soda

1 cup of borax (or additional washing soda)

20 drops of Lemon or Lime Essential Oils

Directions:

Grate the bar of soap finely.

Add the washing soda and borax and combine thoroughly (use a spoon or gloves to prevent your skin from drying)

Add the essential oils and stir well.

Find a nice container to store it in (yogurt containers are great).

Use 1-2 tablespoons per load.

DIY Shampoo

Ingredients:

6 oz Aloe Vera Gel

3 Tbsp Olive Oil

10 Tbsp Baking Soda

20 drops Rosemary Oil

10 drops Peppermint Oil

Directions:

Mix all ingredients together

Store in an 8oz glass or plastic bottle

Antibacterial Liquid Hand Soap

Did you know that the FDA just recently banned a toxic chemical that is most likely in your antibacterial liquid hand soap? Triclosan is a toxic chemical linked to hormone disruption, liver and thyroid toxicity. Although it has been banned, manufacturers have over a year to remove triclosan from hand soaps. By the way, this toxic chemical still can be used in other products such as acne treatments, body washes, antibacterial dish washing soaps. Why not be safe and make your own and avoid products labeled “antibacterial.” Many essential oils have antibacterial and antimicrobial properties like eucalyptus, peppermint, oregano, and tea tree oil.

Ingredients:

Distilled water (or boiled water)

2 tbsp of carrier oil of your choice (like almond or coconut)

1 tbsp Vegetable Glycerin

Essential Oils: Lavender, cedarwood, tea tree (35 drops total)

16 oz Glass pump bottle

Directions:

Pour Castile soap 1/4 full

Add 2 tbsp of a carrier oil

Add 1 tbsp of Vegetable Glycerin

Add the following essential oils: lavender (15 drops), cedarwood (10 drops), tea tree (10 drops)

Fill to the top with distilled water

DIY All-Purpose Cleaner

Check the label of the all-purpose cleaner you have in your home. Does it list “preservative”? Seems innocuous but it’s not. This is another undisclosed ingredient which is most likely formaldehyde, which is a carcinogen. Does it list “colors”? Colors are good, no? Well no, not when they cause cancer.

Ingredients:

16 oz. glass spray bottle

1/4 cup white vinegar

1¾ cups water

30 drops of essential oils of your choice

Recommended essential oil combinations:

15 drops each of Lavender and Lemon

10 drops each of Eucalyptus, Peppermint, and Wild Orange

30 drops doTERRA On Guard®

15 drops each of Grapefruit and doTERRA On Guard®

Directions:

Add all ingredients to spray bottle.

Shake thoroughly.

DIY Wood Polish:

Commercial wood polishes, such as Old English contains liquefied sweetened petroleum gases which may cause genetic defects and cancer. Instead of buying wood polish in the store, make the simple, cheaper, healthier version:

Ingredients:

1/4 cup olive oil

1/4 cup vinegar

10 drops essential oils (Wild Orange, Arborvitae, or Lemon)

Directions:

Add olive oil and vinegar to glass spray bottle.

Add 10 drops of essential oil.

Shake well before each use.

Apply to microfiber cloth and wipe wood surfaces clean. Repeat every few months or as needed.

DIY Glass Cleaner:

This couldn’t get any easier. Pick up your bottle of Windex and read the ingredients. I’m going to go out on a limb and bet the only ingredient you recognize is water.

Ingredients:

1 1/2 cup white vinegar

1/2 cup distilled water

8 drops of any citrus oil of your choice (could use Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, Wild Orange, or a combination)

Directions:

Add the ingredients and shake.

OK, so go into your cabinet and remove those chemicals. Replace them with these natural alternatives that smell AWESOME! Make these in batches so you don’t have to make them often. These also make great gift ideas too. Buy cute bottles and make up a basket for your loved ones. It really doesn’t take much effort and you can rest easy knowing your home isn’t ridden with chemicals.
